What does it mean to decide over your own body when history has denied you even that? A group of women with disabilities take center stage in a raw and necessary theater production, pushing one of society’s major taboos to the limit: the desire for and the right to motherhood. The specter of Nazi Germany, with its inescapable history of forced sterilizations, still weighs on bodies and questions today. By bringing their desires and vulnerabilities to the stage, these artists and their companions confront—head on—the traces of past prejudice and the ongoing societal mandate: Who is allowed to be a mother? Who decides, when the body in question belongs to a woman with a disability?

With courage, biting humor, and unflinching honesty, “Instinct” exposes the daily struggles and dreams that persist despite prejudice. It addresses without taboo the right to abortion, autonomy over one’s own body, the acceptance—or not—of bringing children into the world, and the harsh burden of outside judgment on the desire to become a mother.

This documentary is powerful and urgent. Unfolding between theater rehearsals and intimate confessions, it reminds us that inclusion, equity, and dignity are far from assured.
